Race Summary
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Birkebeiner, the race started at Telemark and finished on Main Street in Hayward. As part of the celebration, a Torch Lighting Relay Run took place on Friday beginning with the lighting of Hayward’s flaming “dish” and continuing on Hwy 63 to light torches in the Seeley and Cable communities. The final lighting took place at the Opening Ceremonies at Telemark Resort.
Dyno Overlays, a company based in Norway with a plant in Hayward, became the major sponsor.
Race leaders Audun Endestad and Todd Boonstra collided 200 meters from the finish line. Todd Boonstra prevailed as the first American to win the race since 1975.
