Registration numbers continued to grow to 6,800.

Due to open water on Lake Hayward, 450 truckloads of snow were put down for the start area in Duffy’s Field, just east of the lake.

Maxwell House joined the events as major sponsor. A new Kortelopet finishers medal was introduced which remains the medal for first time finishers.

Engelbert Hattenberger, creator of the elaborate ice sculptures, introduced the new Haakon Haakonson trophy for the overall Birkebeiner winner.
