Through the efforts of the Cable, Hayward and surrounding communities, the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF) was formed in December of 1984. The ABSF assumed the leadership and organization of the American Birkebeiner cross country ski races.
The start was planned for downtown Hayward, but, due to lack of snow, was moved to Rosie’s Field. A new “year completed” pin was designed which remains today. Local artist, Melisa Morales, designed and created a stained glass “Skade” award given to the women’s Birkebeiner champion.
A children’s race was added to Birkie week activities.
