The official name of the race was changed to American Birkebeiner.
The temperature was a brisk -20F at the start of the race at Lumberjack Bowl. Twin brothers Dave and Don Quinn dominated the field as they raced across Lake Hayward. Dave finished first and Don followed in second place after having lost the trail for a brief stretch.
Busing of participants from Telemark to the start in Hayward as well as clothing transportation became a part of the Birkie tradition.
For the second year, Jacque Lindskoog was the unofficial women’s winner of the Birkebeiner. Race officials allowed her to ski but listed her in the men’s 20-34 year age class.
