Race Summary
For the third year, Curel, a Johnson family business, was the major sponsor of the Birkebeiner. Heritage Bank of Hayward, also a Johnson company, sponsored the Kortelopet.
1990 brought more skiers into the Birkebener fold with the introduction of the 10K event which started after the last waves of Birkebeiner and Kortelopet skiers and finished on Hayward’s Main Street.
For the first time, Kortelopet skiers who were completing their 2nd or greater event, received a year pin rather than an additional Kortelopet medal.
Manfred Nagl eked out victory over 1987 Birkebeiner champion Konrad Hallenbarter by a ski tip or .3 seconds.
